Winter Storm looming

Well, here is our initial stab at the snow forecast. Expect a few refinements with it over the next 24 hours as the storm system is just now coming onshore over the west coast.

Slick roads in northeast Kansas

A Winter Weather Advisory is out for parts of northeast Kansas until Noon. KDOT is reporting slick roads over this area so be cautious if you have travel plans that take you up to Emporia and Topeka.

We have some light snow falling here at the station as I write this but no accumulation is expected.

Snowfall forecast: This weekend

If you have travel plans over central and eastern Kansas tonight and Sunday, you will likely encounter some slippery travel. Most of the weather headaches for the Wichita metro look to be freezing drizzle before changing to a dusting of light snow. At this time, it doesn't look like we'll see as much ice as we did Wednesday night but of course it doesn't take much to cause problems.

The week in review

Good morning! It's nice to refer to the weather this week in past tense. Don't get me wrong: the snow was welcome moisture for us. We ended up with 4 - 4.5" around Wichita. Others got more and while we still need more moisture, we'll take whatever Mother Nature will offer.

This week was noteworthy for the bitterly cold air too. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings, there were several places that had subzero low temperatures. The coldest temperature I could find in the viewing area was Wray, Colorado, as they made it down to -18 Wednesday morning!! In Wichita, the official low that morning was 0. My vehicle (picture above) was one tick higher. By early Thursday morning though, we made it down to -1, the first time in a little over 5 years that Wichita saw a subzero low temp. The last time was December 8, 2005.

Here's hoping the weather this upcoming week is a little less exciting!

Another New Year's resolution...

...I have to post more frequently! So, that's my pledge to you in 2011...more updates from my little corner of Storm Team 12.

I just got back in the office today after being off the last 3 days, recovering from working Mark Larson's AM shift last week. For those of you who consistently work the Midnight or overnight shift, my hat's off to you.

Today was nice and Friday looks mild too but all bets are off after that! Temperatures will drop a bit this weekend with some snow on the way too. In Wichita, we'll likely have to wait until Saturday night or Sunday.

Please note that our forecast calls for all snow, so the moisture indicated here would be the melted equivalent.

As it stands now, a general 2-4" of snow is forecast across the state, with perhaps a little more up in central and northwest Kansas. That said, don't be surprised to see some refinements to this forecast in the coming days. It won't be a huge winter storm, but expect gradual snow to fall.

In any event, it looks downright FRIGID next week!
